Queen Latifah
Dana Elaine Owens - better popularly referred to as Queen Latifah is an American actress, rapper and a singer. Queen Latifah's career in television and music has earned her the Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award Six additional Grammy nominations, an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah was raised in Newark, NJ. She is the daughter of Rita Owens Sr. and Lancelot Owens Jr. Latifah's mother and father divorced after Latifah turned ten. Latifah, who was born and brought up within Newark New Jersey attended Catholic schools in Newark. Latifah was the stage name she used before she turned eight. It means very sensitive in Arabic. Latifah is a very tall girl of 5'10 inches who played on the high school basketball team. She sang the song Home from The Wiz at a school play. Latifah started to beatbox for the rap group Ladies Fresh. Latifah is among the original members of Flavor Unit, which was at the time a group made up of DJ Mark the45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the45King) recorded a demo of Queen Latifah rapper Princess of the Posse. He gave the recording to host Yo! MTV Raps Freddy. Dante Ross of Tommy Boy Music signed Latifah upon hearing the track. She released her first single, Wrath of My Madness, in 1988.
